DIY Chalkboard Cabinet Door Before & After

Standard

I love some good before and after action! Who doesn’t? In this post I showed the old cabinet door that I turned into a chalkboard sign. I seriously had idea after idea on what to do with it. So I thought I’d give ya a little background on where it came from and how it all started.

Even though I had not settled on the reincarnated state of this said salvaged piece, I knew it had to be cleaned, sanded, and primed. All those boring, but necessary steps that come with the territory of re-purposing. I found the door in my Grandfather’s garage. I’ve mentioned before that he held on to ev-er-y-th-ing here.  I was told that this door was taken out of an old house that I grew up in until I was eight or nine. Originally, it was a door to a built in ironing board cabinet. Not needing the ironing board or the cabinet, the door was removed and the space was used as a cubby.

And as promised…the before.

No sanding, scraping, cleaning at all. I knew that most likely she was dressed in a dreadful lead-filled paint. So I took all the proper precautionary steps. I scraped all that I could and wiped it clean with a bleach/water mixture and let out to dry for a couple of weeks. I was a little more worried of bugs or mites living within the wood than I was of the lead paint. Once I knew the wood was completely dried I primed with two coats. I didn’t sand any. I liked the crackled texture that was left behind so I just let it be.

Unfortunately, I do not have any pics of the in-between process. Not a whole lot to see really. After priming I painted the inset of the door with chalkboard paint. I really was making this up as I went along… I did two coats of that as well. So if you could imagine the picture above with bright white trim and black on the inside that’s exactly what the in-between’er was.  And that is how it stayed for quite a while. The project was stuck in some sort of project purgatory…

Blah, blah, blah,

Skip, fast-forward.

Til, one day I bought a tester pot of red paint.

And the light bulb was lit.

Pops of red + me = chemistry

I did some chemisty-ing with this cabinet door.

Viola!!

She stands a whopping 70 inches tall and is a narrow 15 1/2 inches wide

and

cost me zero dollars to make!

A zero-dolla-costin’-pop-of-red!!

(insert happy dance here)

I had the primer and chalkboard paint on hand already. Although, I did just purchase the tester pot of paint right before I painted this, it was intended for another project. So technically I’m still at zero dollars. ( or should that be zero dollar?)

Sorry, getting off task.

How about some side-by-side action!

I’m liking it a bunch-o-much!! The best part is she is so interchangeable! She could be simple home decor, a message board, a menu board, she could even be a garage sale sign whatever you need her for at the time!!

 Which means…

This story may or may not be finished. 😉

But one thing’s for sure,  she’s out of  ‘project purgatory.’  🙂  Yay!

Now, what are you waiting for?

Go!

Do something that has you breakin’ out your happy dance!!

                                                                                         Happy Day!!

Aside

It’s an American dream to be a homeowner. I am so thankful that my family is a part of that “American dream.” I love and appreciate our home and do all I can to make it a happy home. But I still dream of one day my home making me happy. You know, kind of like, looking at a painting that just makes you feel good. You don’t know why, it just does. You have a hard time taking your eyes off it. You just sit and stare, trying to look deeper into each layer. I dream of some day walking into a home that makes me want to stare and take in every teeny tiny detail. I’m constantly designing my dream home. I have a collection of photos of feel good aspects, in case I ever get the chance to make my dream come true. Like this floor plan I found on houseplans.com…its my Mary Poppins flooplan….practically perfect in every way!

No, it’s not a mansion and it might even be a bit “regular,” but my dream home isn’t a dream home because its unattainable, it’s a dream home because its dreamy!

I like a big front porch, and a  back porch that could lead to the mudroom that I’ve always wanted, like this one…

Built ins are a great space saver. They also add that perfect amount of charm! Love, love, love charm!

Here are a few more elements that you’d find in my dreamy dream home…

A bright airy kitchen with large windows to let in light, and open shelves above in place of cabinetry.

And of course, punches of color like these red doors. I love red as accent color!

and this…isn’t gorgeous? I am loving it. I would sooo want one of these in my home. I just love a wood planked wall. I love the contrast of white and bright with rustic touches…

Wait a minute! Is that Bob Harper? Oh, I didn’t even notice! (Ok, ok…who am I foolin’ ? Right? Thats a totally different dream… 😉 )

What (or who ;)) would be in your “dreamy home?”

Surely I’m not the only person who obsesses dreams about a dream home and stores inspirational photos in a desktop folder titled “house fetish”(I think I may have said too much)…

I hope I’m not alone! Dream on, dreamers, dream on!

Happy, I Have a Dream, Monday All!!

I Have a Dream…or two or three or four…

Other Phetishes…

Standard

Please bare with me during construction of my blog, I’m working on adding pictures and some projects that I’ve completed. I really want to beef  it up!! Til then here’s something to chew on…

Here’s a bite bit about me.

25 Things About Me…

1. I don’t have a favorite color…call it commitment issues, I guess.

2. I have a theory about flies…I know its profound ridiculous…but stay with me. I find them suspicious, the way they just appear in the strangest places. (ie my shower….ewwww, gross) Given the expression “I wish I were a fly on the wall…”  Just makes me feel the government is involved. Flies, spies its all too coincidental, just saying.

3. I get goosebumps from the sun and hot water. You’d think it’d be just the opposite. Does this happen to anyone else? Or am I just weird? (that’s rhetorical, by the way! )

4. I LOVE my family!!!

5. I love me some Friends….Monica, Rachel, Phoebs and the whole gang. My kids call them “Mommy’s friends” when it comes on t.v. And of course I don’t argue.

6. I LOVE my real friends too!!

7. I will rarely say “no pun intended…” because they usually are intended. I love playing with words. ( Dorky side coming out…)

8. I’m a real estate stalker. I can’t help it. Sometimes it makes for a driving hazard. Eyes on the road, Lisa. (yikes) The HGTV commercial with the couple driving at night staring in open windows with lights on, yep, that’s me.

9. Number eight is the reason for number nine. I’m getting my real estate license right now. I have one more course and then I’m licensed to stalk sell houses! Super exciting. I’ll do a post on the process if any readers are curious or interested…

10. If I were an angry bird I’d be the yellow one…that’s one useful bird!

11. I love anything new, even if its old, sometimes, especially when its old. Flea market-ing is my favorite shopping!

12. Photography is a hobby of mine. I’d like to keep it that way. I’ve tried to take it to a more professional level, unfortunately, something changes when it becomes work. I do better work as a hobbiest.

13. I would like to own more power tools. I’m a girl’s girl but there’s just something that says “Don’t mess with me” when you can saw and drill things…

14. I’m notoriously late. I’m not proud of this…I do really try hard to be on time. It’s just that I don’t like being early, so it becomes a delicate balance… = )

15. Time stops when I’m in the shower. I swear wish! ( Thank goodness for our instant hot water heater.)

16. Leatha Bolinger is my all time favorite teacher! (I just ran into her the other day and she’s been on my mind so I had to add it to my list.)

17. I want to finish my degree. I currently have my associates. I don’t necessarily want to work in a pre-determined field, I just want that incredibly expensive piece of paper pride.

18. I love, love, love bungalow houses! I want to  will live in one someday!

19. I will never have a public conversation about politics….that can family-sized can of worms is just too big!

20. I heart sarcasm….take that as you wish.

21. I like to paint, just not the clean up.

22. I like to jog. I can’t say run because I’m sure what I do hardly qualifies as running. (I don’t want to take anything away from those that actually do run.) The hardest part is getting out the door…something to work on…

23. I don’t think that I can ever get tired of Mexican food. More, por favor!!

24. I am a summer person. Even though I’m in the mid-west with torturing humidity levels, I’d prefer it over wind-chills, ice, and snow!

25. I LOVE God!! I strive everyday to grow closer to Him.

Well that’ll be enough about me. For the readers who don’t know me, now you do, a little anyway. For the readers who do know me, maybe you got a chuckle or two.

Happy Thursday All!!
